This is what many people think music production will be reduced to as AI Music technology improves. Even renowned electronic music producer Joel Zimmerman, better known as Deadmau5, has talked about this path forward but is less concerned with AI’s ability to generate music that’s, well, … good.

In a recent interview with MusicTech Zimmerman had this to say about ChatGPT, “take the collective stupidity of the world and make a robot fucking barf it out. It’s not gonna be that genius, but it’s gonna get you what you want.”

And he’s not wrong. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman was asked in an interview what expectations people have about recent AI breakthroughs like ChatGPT that people are getting wrong. His response was that, because it [ChatGPT] runs on a large language model, it isn’t coming up with fundamentally new ideas and therefore isn’t going to do things like give us the cure for cancer.

Many would extrapolate that idea to the current AI technologies for generating music. In other words, it’s not going to make something new. Similarly, Zimmerman goes on to say, “Great. Let it [AI music generators] go. Unleash the beast, you know – holy shit would that ever open up the niche market for actual musicianship.”

But isn’t he making the same incorrect assumptions that visual artists made?

How long until we’re all shocked by the quality of AI-generated music?
